There have been a lot of stories and testimonies written and reported about North Korean defectors who have successfully managed to escape the harsh condition in their country. Most notable of which is the story of Yeonmi Park and her escape out of North Korea.
Who is Yeonmi Park?
Yeonmi Park is a North Korean refugee who along with her family managed to escape their country. She was born in Hyesan, North Korea during the time when the Soviet Union was beginning to fall which greatly affected the living condition of the people in North Korea. She grew up in North Korea until she escaped the country at the age of 13.
Yeonmi Park’s story how she crossed the North Korean border to China is featured on reason.com and on Reason TV. She revealed in the interview on Reason TV her horrible experiences especially when she and her mother reached China. In North Korea, Yeonmi said that their life in North Korea was very hard. They used to eat grass, and even dragonflies for their meals. A potato was the only dinner she and her family had.
However, she didn’t know that much worse than that would happen to her after reaching China.

These were the brief stories of the horrors and nightmares that Yeonmi experienced right after they crossed the border. When they reached South Korea, Yeonmi studied in Seoul. She was also reunited with her sister who was the first one to escape North Korea.
Most of their stories coincide with one another. Now, Yeonmi is actively raising awareness about life in North Korea, and wrote and relased a book on Amazon entitled In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom.She also appeared on TV and attended several speaking engagement where he shared her stories.
